Elderly and Less Mobile Guests Aboard: A Practical Guide

A grandmother in her nineties, a father recovering from surgery, an uncle who uses a cane: older and less mobile guests are often the people who most want to be aboard. With a little preparation, many of them can be. The most useful step is the simplest one, and it comes first.

Call Ahead

Before the day, call (619) 986-7344 and describe who is coming and what each person may need. The crew will talk through boarding with you. JADA is a classic wooden sailing yacht, a yawl built in 1938, and boarding any vessel from a dock involves a step and some movement. A frank conversation in advance lets everyone plan, and it gives you a chance to ask about anything else that matters to your guests, including restroom questions.

Footwear and Clothing

Our guide on what to wear on the day has more detail.

Staying Steady Aboard

Once aboard, the steadiest place for an older guest is seated. Encourage them to stay seated while the vessel is moving, and to keep a hand on something solid when standing. If they would like to place flowers or take part in the release, a family member can bring the moment to them. The ceremony can gather around whoever needs to stay put.

Medications, Sun and Cold

Ask each guest to keep their usual medications in a pocket rather than a bag left ashore, especially anything taken on a schedule or needed quickly. If someone is concerned about seasickness, they should ask their doctor or pharmacist ahead of time, since some remedies can interact with other medications or cause drowsiness. Sun on the water is stronger than it feels, so bring sunscreen and a hat. A light blanket or extra jacket is welcome on cooler days. Water to drink helps too.

Bring a Companion

Pair each older or less mobile guest with one specific person whose role for the day is to stay close: a steady arm when boarding, a hand to hold, someone watching for signs of fatigue or chill. This frees everyone else to be present in the ceremony, and it gives the guest someone to lean on without having to ask.

A little planning goes a long way. Call, ask your questions, and let the crew help you think it through.
