How to Choose the Time of Day for a Burial at Sea Ceremony

The time of day shapes the ceremony more than most families realize when booking. San Diego's marine environment changes throughout the day — light, wind, sea state — and the choices each time window offers are worth thinking about before committing to a departure time.

Morning: 8–11 a.m.

Morning departures offer the calmest sea conditions of the day. Northwest wind is typically light or absent before noon, particularly in summer. The marine layer that characterizes spring mornings gives the light a soft, diffuse quality — less dramatic than sunset but gentler, more intimate. Families with elderly guests, young children, or anyone sensitive to motion almost always benefit from a morning ceremony. The harbor is quiet, the transit unhurried, and the return is complete before afternoon heat and wind arrive.

Midday: 11 a.m.–2 p.m.

Midday departures work well in fall and winter when marine layer is minimal and afternoon wind hasn't built. In summer, by noon the northwest breeze has typically filled in and sea state is choppier than in the morning. Midday light is high and direct — good for photographs, less conducive to the atmospheric quality many families are seeking. If the ceremony includes a shared meal aboard, midday allows time for both the transit and a relaxed return.

Afternoon and Sunset: 3–7 p.m.

Late afternoon and sunset ceremonies are the most visually dramatic. San Diego sunsets over the open Pacific — west of Point Loma, with no landmass between you and Hawaii — are extraordinary. The tradeoff is that afternoon wind is at its peak, sea state is rougher, and the light changes rapidly. Sunset ceremonies require a backup plan if conditions deteriorate. For families for whom the visual experience is paramount, a fall or winter sunset ceremony is worth the added variability.

There is no objectively right time of day. There is the time that fits your family's needs, your guests' comfort, and the kind of ceremony you are trying to create.
