The First Anniversary After a Burial at Sea

Gentle ways families mark the first anniversary of a burial at sea: returning to the water, a shore visit, a meal, a letter, and sharing the coordinates.

The first anniversary of a death can arrive with surprising weight. For families whose loved one rests at sea, it raises a gentle question: how do we mark a day when there is no grave to visit? The answer is that there are many ways, and none of them is required. Here are some that families choose.

Returning to the Water

Some families go back out to the ocean on or near the anniversary. With the record of the GPS coordinates from the ceremony, a vessel can return to the place of the release. There is nothing there but water and sky, and for many that is the point. If you bring flowers, choose loose petals or natural blooms without wire, foam or wrapping. Our post on returning to the sea says more.

A Visit to the Shore

Others prefer to stay on land. Point Loma looks out over the waters where San Diego ceremonies take place, and any beach facing the Pacific can serve. Some families walk the shoreline, read a few words aloud, or simply sit and watch the water for an hour. Families who live far from San Diego often go to whatever coast or lake is nearest. The ocean is one body of water.

A Meal, a Letter, a Ritual

Small rituals often carry more than large ones. A tradition that is easy to repeat may become something the family keeps for years.

A Note on Grief

The weeks before an anniversary can be harder than the day itself. Some people feel heavier than they expected; others feel guilty for feeling lighter. Both are normal. Grief does not move in a straight line, and the first year is not a test to be passed. If grief feels overwhelming, a hospice bereavement program, a grief group or a counselor can help. Our reflection on grief at sea and on land may also be of comfort.

However you mark the day, or if you mark it quietly and alone, it is enough. The sea will be there whenever you are ready.
