What the Captain Does During the Ceremony

Families sometimes wonder how much the crew is involved during the ceremony itself — whether they will be present, whether they participate, and how to think about their role. The answer is simple but worth spelling out: the crew serves the ceremony without directing it. The family leads.

Navigation and Positioning

The captain is responsible for bringing the vessel safely and legally to the ceremony site — clearing the harbor, rounding Point Loma, and proceeding to a verified position at least three nautical miles offshore. GPS is used to confirm location before the ceremony begins. The captain does not begin the ceremony; the captain simply quiets the engine and nods to the family that they are in position and the time is theirs.

During the Ceremony

The captain and crew step back. They are aboard and available, but they do not observe from close proximity. Some families want the crew present; most find a natural privacy in the open water that makes the crew's physical position less important than their silence. The crew does not speak, photograph, or participate unless invited to do so.

The Figure-Eight

When the family indicates the release is complete, the captain steers a deliberate figure-eight around the release point — two wide arcs that circle the site before turning toward home. This maritime tradition has no single origin but is observed at sea burials throughout the U.S. Navy and in private ceremonies. It is a way of marking the place, of circling it twice before leaving it. Families may ask for a pause, for a longer loop, or to linger at the site. There is no schedule.

Eight Bells

As the vessel turns homeward, the captain rings eight bells — the traditional naval signal for the end of a watch. It is the oldest maritime farewell, and it has been rung at sea funerals for centuries. The sound carries across the water in a way that feels, as one family put it, like punctuation: the ceremony is complete. The person is home.
